  Growing Greener Projects
four red block Brinkerton Abandoned Mine Drainage (AMD) Reclamation Project - The Brinkerton AMD Reclamation Project will treat the first and largest abandoned mine pollution source in the Sewickley Creek Watershed. A recent and unexpected change in the location of one of the pollution sources at the site has caused some of the water to bypass a key component of the treatment system. Work will involve reconfiguring the treatment system to once again treat the water presently bypassing the system and to finish up several additional work items on the project. The Westmoreland Conservation District is partnering with the Sewickley Creek Watershed Association and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to complete this project by the fall of 2008.
six red block Westmoreland Fairgrounds Run-off Control - A project to install stormwater controls and water-quality improvements to control excessive sediment and nutrient discharge from the fairground arena and animal buildings. The project will include a sedimentation basin, swales, ditches, and drainage structures. The Westmoreland Conservation District is partnering with Mount Pleasant Township and the Fairgrounds Association to complete this project by fall of 2008.
  Other Important Conservation Projects
one purple block Lowber Abandoned Mine Drainage (AMD) Treatment Project - This project was completed in the fall of 2007. This very large treatment system removes large amounts of metals from the heavy flow of abandoned mine drainage and helps to resolve what was once a large orange plume in the Youghiogheny River where Sewickley Creek entered into it.
two purple block Wilson Run Abandoned Mind Drainage (AMD) Treatment Project - The most recent work completed at this site is the retrofitting of an existing treatment system. The Westmoreland Conservation District partnered with the Sewickley Creek Watershed Association in 2007 to update this facility to better remove metals from the abandoned mine drainage that exists on this site. This site is visible from the eastbound lane of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
three purple block Shupe Run Streambank Stabilization - A project to stabilize a badly eroding streambank in Willow Park, Mount Pleasant Borough. The Westmoreland Conservation District is partnering with Mount Pleasant Borough and the Jacobs Creek Watershed Association to complete this project in the spring of 2008.
